Excellent Antique Carl Zeiss Jena Microscope In Original Teak Carrier Case
This microscope has a jug handle, Japanned metal stand, (type Stativ 5a) and is stamped NIMR 1035 just below the fine adjustment wheel. This stamp means it was manufactured for and bought by the newly created National Institute for Medical Research which was founded in 1913 in North London and was, most likely, one of the very first microscopes owned and used by this world famous research institute. The rest of the microscope body is lacquered brass which is almost unblemished and is controlled using a rack and pinion coarse focus mechanism and a fine focus wheel. My research suggests that this type of Zeiss microscope was one of the first to incorporate the rack and pinion mechanism.

The circular Vulcanite revolving and centering stage is controlled by two brass milled heads and the stage has been modified to incorporate an interesting and very rare raised Vulcanite top light adaptor, (see photographs) possibly used to study the surfaces of crystals. This is a joint interpretation by myself and the managing director of Brunel Microscopes, (who, like myself had never seen such an attachment before).

One eyepiece comes with the instrument along with three objectives, all in excellent condition. The photograph of the stained cross-section of a plant stem was taken using the 8mm lens. The objective lenses are, (1) Apochromat 3mm Na 0.95 dry lens with correction ring in original brass canister, (2) Apochromat 8mm Na 0.6 in original brass canister, (3) Apochromat 7mm Na 0.5 in Carl Zeiss A brass canister, (not original).

Below the stage is a swing-out plano-concave mirror in nearly perfect condition. This instrument is in excellent condition, with the usual minor wear expected in an instrument over 100 years old.

Mechanically it is a fine example of superb Zeiss engineering. All the lenses are clear and fully functional and, considering their age, of exceptional quality (as can be seen from the two photographs)...
