Antique Victorian Brass Bar Limb Microscope J. H. Steward London Box & Accessories

Fine example of a mid 19th Century brass Bar-Limb microscope in a fitted wooden case. The microscope is made of lacquered brass and sits on a Y-shaped foot. It tilts, has a rack and pinion main focus and additional fine focus on the rear of the tube.

It has a square stage with a manually adjustable slide rest. The microscope also comes with a set of stage forceps and a live box. Below the stage is a large mirror for focussing the light source. The microscope is labelled on the back of the base with the makers name.

The brass objective lens is unmarked but is a good quality powerful lens. There is a brass'Steward' lens case with the microscope which the lens does not fit into properly so it can only be assumed the lens is not an original. The microscope appears to be in good working order and I have set it up and tested it with a few old slides (see photo).

I'm sure the lenses would probably benefit from a clean but they produce a clear and bright image all the same and the microscope was easy to focus. The microscope comes in its beautiful original fitted case with sections to hold the lenses and eyepiece tube and a bracket for the accessories inside the door.

There is also a pull out tray for holding slides and the microscope itself sits recessed into a wooden board which also slides out of the box to make removing the microscope easier. The box is superb quality with a brass carrying handle although I do not have any keys for it.

The microscope measures approximately 13 tall when not extended. The box is a compact 10 1/2" high X 7 1/2" wide X 6 deep. The microscope is in excellent condition for its age.

It has been used and will have normal signs of wear so please don't expect it to be like new. There are some small knocks and light scratches on the base and some tarnishing on the brass. There are some general signs of wear on the box but it is sturdy and has a lovely aged patina. The microscope has been cleaned and lightly polished and it displays beautifully. The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions at all please ask. The item "Antique Victorian Brass Bar Limb Microscope J.
