Antique transit theodolite, Keuffel & Esser, New York, circa 1942

A beautifully-engineered transit theodolite by the respected American maker, Keuffel and Esser. The company was established in 1867 by two German immigrants, William Keuffel and Herman Esser, and was the first American company to specialise in products of this type. K&E acquired Young and Sons of Philadelphia (whose name also appears on this particular instrument) in 1918. The serial number 79080 dates the theodolite to 1942. It comes with original label and plumb bob, though the case itself is missing.

The theodolite gives a crisp and bright image, the focusing works perfectly, compass dial and spirit levels are all in good order. Unlike many other theodolites, this example quite usefully gives an upright (rather than inverted) image, meaning that it can be used like a conventional telescope. Height 30cm (12") and, with glare shield fitted 28cm (11") in length. The item "Antique transit theodolite, Keuffel & Esser, New York, circa 1942" is in sale since Monday, May 14, 2018.
