A very good'Society of the Arts' pattern antique lacquered brass compound microscope with accessories including bullseye condenser, forceps, tweezers, live box and a good selection of antique microscope slides, with numerous examples by Newton & Co - all presented within the original fitted mahogany case with working lock and key. This style of microscope was popularised by Robert Field in 1855 who won the Society of the Arts prize that year. This particular example bears no maker's name but is believed to date to around 1900.
