A very good'Society of the Arts' pattern antique brass compound microscope with accessories in original fitted mahogany case. This style of microscope was popularised by Robert Field in 1855 who won the Society of the Arts prize that year. This particular example is unmarked but believed to date to around 1900.

One of the objectives is marked Thomas Armstrong of Manchester and the retailers label is for Franks of Deansgate, Manchester. I have numerous other items for sale, including other antique microscopes and optical instruments.
