Antique Brass Compound'Edinburgh' Microscope by Watson of High Holborn London

Antique brass laboratory-used compound'Edinburgh' microscope by Watson of Holborn, London - serial number 23604. Here we have an antique compound microscope from scientific instrument makers W Watson of 313 High Holborn, London - note the retail agent was actually A H Baird of 33 Lothian Street, Edinburgh.

This microscope dates from the early 1900s. This item was used right up until the 1970s in a Courtauld textile laboratory in Lancashire, until the works closed with production transferred elsewhere. As such the microscope is in used but still serviceable condition, with clear signs of use - scuffs/chips to the black paint on the metal frame and also some signs of discolouration and tarnishing to the brass fittings and condenser.

The lenses and mirror however appear in reasonable condition after a light external clean. There are three different eyepieces with progressive magnification and two objective lenses, plus a couple of adapters as follows. Eyepieces - 5x, 10x, 15x, plus removable brass collar and an integral extension tube as shown in photo #1. Objectives - 2/3" and 3/2", plus an adapter containing prisms. There's also another adapter which could fit either the condenser or the main tube (not sure of function) and it appears that the 1/6 inch objective lens is not present in the set, although it is mentioned on the hand-written technical card on the inside door of the fitted mahogany case.

The case also has a working key and lock. There are also some blank specimen slides and cover slips included within the box. This is a high-quality laboratory-standard microscope that would make an excellent display item as is, or would form a great subject for a light restoration and recommissioning. Will be dispatched by insured courier on receipt of cleared funds to mainland UK addresses only.
