19th Century Cased Dollond Of London Library Telescope. A fine 19th Century cased desktop library telescope by the renowned optics maker Dollond of London. The four drawer telescope is of brass with a wood barrel. It is signed'Dollond London' to the first drawer. It attaches to a brass pillar mount with three folding legs. The mount unscrews and folds up neatly to fit in the case. The telescope comes with an additional solar observation lens.
The telescope and mount comes in its original mahogany fitted case. The telescope has a retracted length of 28cm (11 inches) and a fully extended length of 107cm (42 inches). The telescope on stand has a height of 39.5cm (15 ½ inches). The case measures 31cm (12 ¼ inches) by 15cm (6 inches) by 7.5cm (3 inches). The cased set weighs 2.96 Kg.
The hinged annulus which holds the telescope to the stand is unfortunately missing its screw although a modern screw/ nut and bolt would do the job. We do not have the key to the case, but it is unlocked. One of the catches is slightly damaged. The larger of the drawers has some discolouration and a small dent but the rest of the brass work is in good order with light wear commensurate with age as is the wood barrel, telescope stand and case. The lenses are clear and without damage. The item "19th Century Cased Dollond Of London Library Telescope" is in sale since Friday, May 10, 2019.
